Albert Cummings | | | | | | "The man can play guitar...he is a stunning proficient guitarist, with an obvious love for and a seeming ease with the vocabulary of electric-blues...Cummings knows how to make his guitar talk, sing, laugh and cry."

Bel Airs | | | | | | Fronted by brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt on bass and electric guitars, with Michael Cherry on drums, the Bel Airs play a danceable mix with an authentic but eclectic bluesy-country-soul-and-rock-n-roll sound influenced by
the likes of Wilson Picket, Slim Harpo, Howlin' Wolf and Johnny Cash.
Performing together for more than 20 years, the Pruitt brothers' harmony vocal style sets them apart in the
contemporary music scene--leading one reviewer to refer to them as the "Everly Brothers of Blues". David's "big guitar"
and Dick's howling vocals over soulful, right-on rhythm playing make this trio a powerhouse.

Carolyn Wonderland | | | | | | Before relocating from her hometown of Houston to Austin, TX, Carolyn Wonderland picked up a slew of awards in the Houston press, including best female vocalist seven out of eight years running. Wonderland, whose powerful voice garners frequent comparisons to Janis Joplin, was first inspired to get on the stage after seeing local outfit Little Screamin' Kenny & the Sideliners at the Houston club Fitzgerald's. Wonderland released her debut, Play With Matches, on the independent Big Mo label in 1995. In subsequent years, she continued to release albums and tour the U.S., leading the Imperial Monkeys through several incarnations. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide

King. But something more than just blues guitar wizardry was at work within the Chris Duarte Group. Musician magazine recognized it three years later on Tailspin Headwhack, praising “Duarte’s monstrous chops, from funk to punk, from Hendrix to B.B. King, all marked by Duarte’s percussive, in-your-face Strat sound and a subtle use of samples, loops and electronics.”

Harper | | | | | | Harper's infectious mix of blues, soul and Brit-folk is made more endearing by the way he experiments with his harmonica to get some interesting sounds and fuses it with the didgeridoo. The title track is a nod to the indigenous people around the world, while "Does Anybody Really Care" is a lament to the plight of the First Australians. Harper follows the creed of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis: the notes you leave out are just as important as the ones you leave in. Its is an intelligent and self assured record with alot of heart in its lyrics. Christie Eliezer, Australian Musician. Jan. 2004.

Holmes Brothers | | | | | | The New York Times says The Holmes Brothers' sound is "deeply soulful, uplifting and timeless." The Chicago Tribune refers to the trio as "the undisputed masters of blues-based American roots music." The London Times says "their rhythms take over your body while their voices go straight for your heart." OffBeat declares the group possesses "great spirit and outstanding vocal harmonies with a jam band aesthetic that anticipated the 'sacred steel' movement by a decade." Ever since they first joined forces and started performing together in 1979, The Holmes Brothers (bassist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/keyboardist Wendell Holmes and drummer Popsy Dixon) have been bringing their brand of gospel-inflected, spiritually moving and funky music to audiences around the world. Their breathtaking harmonies resonate with a passion and conviction matched only by their inspired musicianship and their ability to perform sanctified gospel, low-down roadhouse blues, deep soul, barroom country and pure pop-all in one set. They've recorded with Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, Odetta, Phoebe Snow, Jungle Brothers and Joan Osborne, and have gigged all over the world--even performing for President Clinton.

Jim Suhler | | | | | | “The blues are back in town”
reprinted from Penrith Live Blues - www.penrithliveblues.co.uk
Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat (Texas) – Penrith Live Blues – 24th September 2003
Penrith Live Blues new concert series began with a visit from affable Texas guitar supremo Jim Suhler, and his band Monkey Beat. In an electrifying performance, he set standards that others will struggle to match. A sensational set ended with the ever appreciative Live Blues audience on its feet and demanding multiple encores from Jim and his hard-working band. The evening’s end was in direct contrast to its low key start when Jim explored his blues roots on acoustic guitar. Such introspection was soon ended, however, when he picked up his battered Fender and his stinging treble cut through the darkened venue. Echoes of fellow lone star state legends Johnny Winter and Stevie-Ray Vaughn abounded as Jim laid down spine tingling slide guitar runs on top of his band’s massive backbeat. This was high-revved, rolling and tumbling Texas blues/rock at its very best and the surge of energy through the room was palpable.

JoAnna Connor | | | | | | PLAYBOY March 1993
FAST CUTS: Joanna Connor, FIGHT (Blind Pig): The obvious comparison is Bonnie Raitt, since she's female and plays blues guitar. I say Connor's a soprano Johnny Winter. The thunderous distortion barrage that opens Robert Johnson's Walkin' Blues should dispel all doubt that women can't play as hard as men. Most blues records miss the passion that made the original stuff so compelling. This one reclaims it all.

Lonnie Brooks | | | | | | Having forged a unique Louisiana/Chicago blues synthesis unlike anyone else's on the competitive Windy City scene, charismatic guitarist Lonnie Brooks has long reigned as one of the town's top bluesmen. A masterful showman, the good-natured Brooks puts on a show equal to his recordings (and that's saying a lot, considering there are four decades of wax to choose from).
Born Lee Baker Jr. in Louisiana, Brooks took his time when choosing his vocation; he didn't play guitar seriously until he was in his early twenties and living in Port Arthur, TX. Rapidly assimilating the licks of B.B. King and Long John Hunter, he landed a gig with zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier (not a bad way to break into the business) before inaugurating his own recording career in 1957 with the influential swamp pop ballad "Family Rules" for Eddie Shuler's Lake Charles, LA-based Goldband Records. The young rock & roller -- then billed as Guitar Junior -- enjoyed more regional success on Goldband with the rocking dance number "The Crawl" (covered much later by the Fabulous Thunderbirds). Mercury also issued two 45s by Guitar Junior.
When Sam Cooke offered the young rocker a chance to accompany him to Chicago, he gladly accepted. But two problems faced him once he arrived: there was another Guitar Junior in town (precipitating the birth of Lonnie Brooks), and the bayou blues that so enthralled Gulf Coast crowds didn't cut it up north. Scattered session work (he played on Jimmy Reed's Vee-Jay classic "Big Boss Man") and a series of R&B-oriented 45s for Midas, USA, Chirrup, and Chess ensued during the '60s, as Brooks learned a new style of blues. The Guitar Junior sobriquet was briefly dusted off in 1969 for his Capitol album debut, Broke & Hungry, but its lack of success buried the alias for good.
By the late '70s, Brooks was gaining a deserved reputation as an exceptionally dynamic Chicago bluesman with a fresh perspective. He cut four outstanding sides for Alligator's first batch of Living Chicago Blues anthologies in 1978 that quickly led to his own Aligator debut LP, Bayou Lightning, the next year. Five more albums of his own for the firm and extensive touring cemented Brooks' standing as a Chicago blues giant. Son Ronnie Baker Brooks is a chip off the proverbial block, playing rhythm guitar in his old man's band and duetting on "Like Father, Like Son" on Lonnie's 1991 album Satisfaction Guaranteed. Brooks long association with Alligator Records continued into the late '90s with the release of Roadhouse Rules in 1996, which focused more on R&B than down-home blues, and Lone Star Shootout in 1999. The disc featured Brooks with fellow guitar slingers Long John Hunter and Phillip Walker playing together and solo in varied combinations of bluespower. ~ Bill Dahl & Al Campbell, All Music Guide

Magic Slim & The Teardrops | | | | | | Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers. It's no wonder that Magic Slim and the Teardrops, considered by many "the last real Chicago blues band," have become one of the busiest and best-loved blues bands around. As Blues Revue wrote, "Whoever the house band in blues heaven may be, even money says they're wearing out Magic Slim albums trying to get that Teardrops sound down cold."

Michael Kelsey | | | | | | King of the Guitar Competitions Crowns its King
Saturday's Guitarmageddon competition uncovered Indianapolis, Indiana's best-kept secret. Michael Kelsey showed the audience and the judges he was worthy of being the best amateur guitarist in the country, though his playing was anything but amateurish. With jaw-dropping chops and charisma that rivals Jim Morrison, this guy's gonna be around a while. Using an old acoustic guitar as a vehicle of expression, and doing everything from detuning his strings to pounding on the back and sides, truly made Michael an original and innovative force to be reckoned with. We'll hear great things from this guy in the future.

With each subsequent release, Morgan's powerful guitar playing and The Crawl's road-proven stage shows made for one of the blues' great success stories. Mike Morgan and The Crawl's fiery stage shows draw rave reviews from critics and left fans open-mouthed in amazement. Smokin' Joe Kubek w/ B'nois King | | | | | | Another young Texas axeman from the old school, Smokin' Joe Kubek issued his band's debut disc in 1991 on Bullseye Blues, Steppin' Out Texas Style. Kubek was already playing his smokin' guitar on the Lone State chitlin circuit at age 14, supporting such musicians as Freddie King. Soon, he formed his own band and began playing a number of bars across Dallas. In the '80s, he met guitarist/vocalist B'nois King, a native of Monroe, LA, and the duo formed the first edition of the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band. The Smokin' Joe Kubek Band began playing the rest of the southwest in the late '80s. In 1991, they signed to Bullseye Blues, releasing their debut Steppin' Out Texas Style the same year. Following its release, the band launched their first national tour. For the rest of the '90s, the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band toured the United States and toured frequently and issued records like 1993's Texas Cadillac, 1996's Got My Mind Back and 2000's Bite Me. In 2003 Kubek and guitarist/vocalist Bnois King released Roadhouse Research on the Blind Pig label. The duo's second release for Blind Pig, Show Me the Money, came out in 2004. ~ Bill Dahl & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

The Tablerockers feat. Baby Jason | | | | | | The Tablerockers’ blues roots run long and deep. The band was founded in 1981 when a group of Lincoln, Nebraska's best musicians headed to the tiny town of Table Rock for a killer weekend jam session. It included former members of The Cotton Blues Band, Homecookin’, and Little Jimmy Valentine and the Heartmurmurs. The end result was a new group based in Lincoln from 1981-1992, called The Tablerockers.
The band quickly became the houseband at the internationally known Zoo Bar (winner of the Blues Foundations “Blues Club of the Year” and known as one of the top blues venues in the USA for over 30 years). It was during these years Tablerockers’ bass-man Larry Boehmer backed some of the biggest names in blues including Charlie Musselwhite, Carey Bell, Snooky Pryor, William Clarke, Magic Slim, Larry Davis, Big Walter Horton, Lavelle White, Louisiana Red, Joe Houston, Eddy Clearwater, and Earlene Owens.
In 1991 The Tablerockers were voted the “Best Unsigned Blues Band” in the Midwest, and competed in the finals in Long Beach, CA, against Mem Shannon, Guy Davis, and Dave Specter and the Bluebirds featuring Barking Bill. One CD was recorded during this time and it featured guest appearances by Magic Slim and Earlene Owens.
When the group disbanded in 1992, former members went on to play with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, Sam Lay, Jimmy Rogers, The Legendary Blues Band, and Mike Morgan and the Crawl, all well-known national recording artists.
The current band is based in NW Arkansas, and premiered in December of 2001. It features Jason Davis on guitar and vocals, Larry Boehmer (from the original Tablerockers) on bass, and Dallas, TX native David Watson on drums.
The new Tablerockers are continuing in the tradition of the old band, having recently won the Ozark Blues Society’s Battle of the Bands contest. This year the band released their new CD, Shake Your Junk, and just finished a third tour with Southern California blues legend, James Harman. The band is widening it's touring radius, so watch for them at festivals and clubs throughout the Midwest and South. When it comes to pure, hard-drivin', Chicago-based blues...The Tablerockers can't be beat.
